Latin American Naval Forces: Regional Overview

A new Mexican Navy for the XXI Century.

The Mexican Naval Aviation is under its most aggressive modernization process of the last 20 years.

The US$1.11 billion plan includes the acquisition of a new Caribe class OPV with capacity for 2 new Panther helicopters, modernized AEW&ISR Hawkeye aircrafts, modified Mi-24 Helicopters for Amphibious Transport&Attack Support, and the latest generation of Mi-17 with BAE systems ISR technology.

For the second phase of this program the Naval Aviation will acquire new Light Attack Fighter aircrafts.

Meet the facts about the Carrier, aircrafts and pilots
Brazil has big upgrades scheduled for the Skyhawks, Sea Kings and the Sao Paulo Carrier, plus the desire to acquire a fixed-wing patrol aircraft. With international missions in the rise and with the obvious need to integrate its Naval and Marine Corps forces more along UN peacekeeping operations, huge investments are due to be made very soon.
Chilean Navy looking for new Frigates
The Chilean Ministry of defense has announced an international call for bids for the acquisition of at least 3 new build frigates for the surface fleet under the new program "FRAGATA".

If your company is being told that defense spending and procurement operations of Naval equipment in this region is almost nonexistent, or in a dramatic decline, you might want to get a second opinion.

The much improved relation between Chile and Argentina, is reflected by Argentina sending one of its type 42 destroyers to a Chilean shipyard for conversion, to carry Sea King helicopters.

Argentina is now resurrecting its own frigate building program and has been very active in the second hand market.

It recently acquired a fleet replenishment ship from France, now the new A.R.A. Patagonia, and a couple of patrol craft "Guardian 22" class.

One of its submarines is being refitted in Brazil, and MK-48 submarine launched torpedoes are being acquired to replace the obsolete MK-37.

Embarked Sea King helicopters are being fitted with Exocet missiles, and chartered merchant ships are also being used for military purposes.

The Chilean submarine force has already 2 "Scorpene" class submarines building in France and Spain by DNC & BAZAN Industries.

This was executed in order to replace the two "Oberon" class submarines, and the Navy is developing a large shipbuilding infrastructure to support commercial activities throughout the region.

The Brazilian Navy has restarted its nuclear-submarine program, spending over US$70M on uranium enriching facilities, a research unit and a prototype nuclear powered submarine (SSN).

The Navy now has 4 "Tupy" class German designed diesel submarines in service, and decided to start a project with the first completely Brazilian designed and built diesel submarine.

This submarine was planned to be in service in 2008. In this field, Brazil is the regional leader.

Should the Brazilian Navy carry through its SSN program, it would become one of only six navies able to deploy submarines worldwide.
